And, than imagine water never deeper than 1 meter, 50-100 km in almost any direction you choose. Waist deep, warm water, so that whenever you get off your kiteboard, there is a hard ground under you.
And then imagine kilometers and kilometers of flat water surface with almost no waves!

Cape Hatteras from space:
Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, is known around the world as the land of kiteboarding. 120 km of unlimited access to the water, both soundside and oceanside, allow riders to pick and choose their perfect kite spot. The island bends over its length to create sideshore conditions in almost any wind direction. Combine the fact that it is far off the mainland, and you have the perfect recipe for steady, consistent winds for riders of any distance.
Sign up for this nine day kitesurfing camp sponsored by Virginia Power Kites and Oslo Kite School (from Norway!) if you are interested in developing the skills to kitesurf: July 12th-21st .
With more than 100 km of waist-deep water, Pamlico Sound, inland of Hatteras, is considered the best learning spot in the world. Just across the street, perfect sideshore conditions blow on the Atlantic Ocean for intense wave riding.
Cape Hatteras is administered by the National Park Service. Entrance to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore is free, and several visitor centers are open in summer months. There are several hotels waiting for guests.
Camp Location:
Located in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Cape Hatteras is a barrier island that receives some of the best waves on the east coast as well as constant winds. In July, the average wind speed is 11 mph (5 m/s), which means that kitesurfing can be an enjoyable sport during this time of the year. The average air temperature in July is balmy 86 degrees(30 degrees celsius), and the average low is a pleasant 72 degrees (22 deg C). The water temperature in July is around 78 degree (27 degrees celsius).

In this camp, you will spend two days obtaining wakeboarding and body dragging skills (in Kitty Hawk, NC) and seven days in Buxton, NC. working on kitesurfing. Kitesurfing lessons will be on the sound side as well as on the ocean side. On light and no wind days, we will also teach surfing, kite landboarding, and kite buggying. All equipment and gear provided or bring your own gear. We have arranged for the camp to be nine days, but there will only be 8 days of instruction (we plan for at least one bad weather rainy day in advance; we want to be sure that you have 8 full days of instruction for the camp so plan to stay in the Outer Banks for 9 days total). This is an international camp with many participants also coming from abroad.
Please contact us at customersupport@virginiapowerkites.com to schedule for this camp. Food and lodging are not provided this camp, but you can contact us, and we can give you suggestions. Please reserve a hotel room for two days in Kitty Hawk, NC (July 12th-13th) and seven days in Buxton, NC (July 14-21st).
Our nine day camp (eight actual days of instruction because we plan in advance for at least one rainy day) will be an incredible experience and adventure. You will learn the skills to wakeboard, surf, kite buggy, kite landboard, and kitesurf all in one camp with a small group.
This will be an intense, unforgettable camp because we will go work on your kitesurfing skills from dawn to dusk for eight uninterrupted days (if we are blessed with good weather and wind), all with a visiting power kiting instructor from Norway and Virginia Power Kites professional instruction. Unlike other camps where you have only a few days of instruction, this is a longer seven day camp with all day long instruction. We emphasize safety and a fun filled experience. .This will be a theory intensive course, and everyone will learn to be comfortable with different kites in different conditions. By adding the elements of kite buggying, wakeboarding, and kite landboarding into the camp, we will make this an unforgettable experience for you. In many camps, you have to go back home because the wind dies. We solve that problem by teaching you kite buggying and kite landboarding on light wind days and teaching you how to surf on no wind days. You will also learn to be familiar with basic meteorology.
Your first two days at the camp: If you are a beginner kiteboarder, or you just want to learn, this is the camp for you. The first two days will be spent in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, where you will learn how to wakeboard in the warm, spacious sound. You will learn how to do the water start and how to ride heelside and toeside by the end of the day. These edging and board skills will directly transfer to kiteboarding. More advanced students can learn such moves as toeside and heelside 180s as well as aerial moves such as jumping the wake and making 180 degree aerials. (this will be on a Monday, so book a hotel for Kitty Hawk, NC).
Wakeboarding skills directly translate to kiteboarding. For instance, if you can water start both ways wakeboarding, water starting kiteboarding will be much easier. If you can carve with a wakeboard toeside and heelside, you can do the same kiteboarding. If you can do toeside and heelside 180s, learning a toeside or heelside 180 will accelerate the process of learning how to make a smooth turn from one direction to the next in kiteboarding. That is why we spend two full days covering board skills. We plan to help everyone learn at least the water start, and some students will progress to doing all of the other basic skills in wakebaording. It typically takes two days to learn how to wakeboard for some students. We might also practice body dragging in the sound as well as basic kite skills.
Your third day at the camp (July 14th): During your third day, you will drive to Buxton, North Carolina. Once we arrive in the evening, we will all go out to eat together. Many participants will be traveling from Europe, so this will be quite an occasion to meet people from different countries. This will be a good day to kick back and relax and enjoy the fine dining in Cape Hatteras.
Days 4-9: We will spend days four through nine getting you familiar with the sports of kitesurfing, surfing, kite buggying, and kite landboarding. We will also work on getting you familiar with kiting on the sound side and the ocean side. Our primary emphasis will be on kitesurfing, but when the winds get lighter, we will not just put you on a wakeboard or tell you to come back another day. Instead, we will work on surfing skills or on kite landboarding and kite buggying with larger kites. All of these skills reinforce each other, and you will be able to enjoy all of this experience with other people who are also learning. First, we will cover the theory behind kiteboarding safety: how to launch, land, and to perform self-rescue. We will also go over basic meteorology and discuss wind patterns as well as how ground swell and swell is produced in the ocean. After learning basic kite skills with the kite buggy, students will work on body dragging in the soundside and in the ocean, Then, you will progress to riding with a board. More advanced students will learn how to ride strapless in the ocean. We will go over the theory about how to ride downwind, upwind, and to perform basic jumps and transitions, as well as the theory behind strapless kitesurfing. Every day, we will have a session in which students discuss what they have learned together as well as on their different strengths and weaknesses. We want every student to promote safety in the sport, and we encourage everyone to kite responsibly.
To learn kiteboarding, you must first master:
*control of small trainer kites and power kites (2-3 days time to learn for the average student)
Then, you progress to:
* body dragging (at least 2 days, with and without the board, as well as downwind and upwind)
Lastly, you must develop:
*board skills by wakeboarding and practicing the water start (at least 3 days; you must put all the skills together)
* practicing the water start on the sound side and then the ocean side
During this camp, we will also offer 10% off all used gear and equipment. We will have a wide variety of kites in different sizes for different wind conditions and to give you a good idea of the diverse types of kites available on the market, from traditional C-kites to bow and delta kites, as well as closed cell foil kites and kites designed for kite buggying and power kiting.
*If there is inclement weather, such as extensive rain, we will have to extend the dates of the camp, so please reserve a hotel room in Hatteras until the 21st.
If we finish the camp earlier, you'll be able to enjoy Frisco, North Carolina and do some sightseeing and more kiteboarding. Please note that the maximum amount of participants in this camp is 10, and you must sign up for the camp by June 1st, 2010. You may sign up for the seven day camp by making a deposit by June 1st.
See the deposit product ($500): http://www.virginiapowerkites.com/LESSONS-AND-CAMPS-c25/
You must pay the balance by July 1st (you can pay the deposit twice to make the whole payment). People are signing up for this camp from abroad as well as in the United States, so this camp will also be a cross-cultural experience besides being a lot of fun.
